The Digital Landscape is Shifting Fast in 2026.

If you feel like the digital marketing world is moving faster than ever, you’re not alone. We cover all the news and dig through it saving your business time. Let’s begin.

As a small business owner here in Cow-lumbus, Ohio (and beyond), your focus needs to be on adapting. You can’t control the billion-dollar deals between tech giants, but you can control your strategy, your content, and your local presence.

One of the biggest tips is have a Youtube strategy. We see over 10x the views on shorts on Youtube vs traditional videos. It’s so important that we have added it into the mix of offerings to our clients at Kow Abundant. See the package

Many local businesses were affected by the big snow storm FERN in January; let’s hope for warmer days ahead! We cover a lot this month already so you can stay informed and help your business grow.

First off, Kow Abundant won many major awards in 2025 and 2026 already. We cover that more later and want to thank our clients for this achievement, we couldn’t have done it without you.

In big news, the tech landscape is shifting beneath our feet. The biggest story this month is the “AI Wars” taking a massive turn: Apple has officially partnered with Google Gemini for the next generation of Siri, leaving OpenAI in a difficult spot. At the same time, the long-awaited TikTok US deal has finally closed, bringing some stability to the social media giant under Oracle and Silverlake. We cover all this in our full video report below.

For small businesses, the lesson is clear: Adaptability is everything. While the tech giants fight over billion-dollar ad deals and antitrust lawsuits (which Google seems to be winning, by the way), your focus should remain on what you control: Your content, your reputation, and your local presence. We give some great tips as well in this email and on our site for the full breakdown of it all along with additional client questions and tips.

This month, we’re diving into the massive volatility we saw in recent Google Algorithms, why YouTube is now a non-negotiable part of your SEO strategy, and answering your top questions about why Google Ads work the way they do.

Here is to a prosperous February!

UPDATE: ChatGPT shifted strategy already after backlash from the original high price of $1 million. They have since “lowered” the price to only $200K to start for advertisers. Still a very high sum that blocks out most all small businesses. We will follow changes as we are sure they will occur and most likely lower minimums as time rolls on. It is also invite-only and tracking is said to be minimal with costs being $60 per 1000 impressions (not clicks mind you).

🔥 Top News: What it Means for Your Small Business

1. Apple Chooses Google Gemini for Siri (Leaving OpenAI in the Cold)

This is massive. In a move that shocked the tech world, Apple has entered a multi-year collaboration with Google to power the next generation of Siri with Gemini models. This is a huge “punch in the face” to Johnny Ive and Sam Altman at OpenAI, who were reportedly courting Apple. What it means for you: Google is cementing its dominance in AI and Search. Your business needs to be discoverable not just on a Google results page, but wherever Google’s AI models are providing answers—including on every iPhone, Good SEO is good GEO or AI search as stated by Google directly.

2. ChatGPT Ads Are Coming… at a price starting at $200K.

OpenAI finally announced its advertising guidelines for ChatGPT. The catch? The minimum entry point is a staggering $200K. What it means for you: Small businesses are locked out of this platform for now. Your ad budget is still best spent on platforms like Google Ads and Facebook/Instagram, where you can target local Columbus customers effectively without a seven-figure spend.

3. YouTube is No Longer Optional for SEO

Data from Search Engine Land shows that YouTube is now a core part of search infrastructure, with nearly 30% of Google’s AI Overviews citing a YouTube video. It’s the second most visited website in the world, drawing 5.4x more visits than Facebook. What it means for you: If your business isn’t on YouTube, you’re invisible to a huge chunk of your audience. You don’t need cinematic masterpieces. Helpful how-to videos, product demos, and YouTube Shorts are powerful tools for driving local visibility. We cover this and more in our video review, link above.

  • Search Volatility: The December Broad Core update caused massive ranking shifts, and late January has shown even more volatility. We are monitoring this closely for all clients.

  • Google has mostly won the DOJ lawsuit: Google was declared a monopoly by the DOJ which makes them subject to smaller court lawsuits now. They do not have to sell Android or Chrome or the Ad Exchange business which is a major win for Google overall. This ensures their dominance in the ad space and main player moving forward. Google is appealing currently the monopoly call as well as the remedies to release data to parties about their ad data business. They cite that this will majorly affect their product and make it possible for spammers to “reverse-engineer” some of their algorithm. We largely agree with this fact and do not recommend that it be released.

📉 The “Update that Changed Everything”: Surviving the Google Algorithm Rollercoaster

If you noticed your website traffic swinging wildly over the holidays and into January, you weren’t imagining things. The last few months have been some of the most turbulent in SEO history, with Google releasing a relentless stream of updates that have fundamentally reshaped the search landscape.

We are calling this the era of “Vibe Coding”—where the algorithm seems to shift based on user intent “vibes” rather than just traditional keywords, often requiring rapid-fire updates to fix previous corrections.

The Timeline of Turbulence

It hasn’t just been one update; it’s been a marathon.

  • March, June, & August Core Updates: The year started heavy with broad core updates that set the stage for volatility.

  • The “Thanksgiving” Update: Just when business owners wanted to relax, Google unleashed ranking volatility right over the holiday break. Read the community reaction here.

  • The December Broad Core Update: This was the big one. Described by experts as one of the most impactful updates in years, it caused massive shifts in rankings globally.

  • January 2026 Volatility: The dust hasn’t settled. In late January, we saw “chatter” (industry talk) spiking again, suggesting Google is releasing unconfirmed updates to “fix” the results from December.

The Winners & Losers (It’s Not Who You Think)

What makes this recent volatility so unique is who is winning. According to SEO expert Glenn Gabe and our own internal data, there has been a massive shift in visibility:

  • WINNERS: YouTube & X (formerly Twitter): Google is now indexing and surfacing social content like never before. X.com posts and YouTube videos are surging in “Google Discover” and search results. This confirms that YouTube is no longer just video—it is core SEO infrastructure.

  • LOSERS: News & Informational Sites: Many traditional news publishers and content-heavy sites saw significant drops in visibility.

  • THE UGLY: Spam Increases: Ironically, despite the updates aiming to clean up the web, many users have reported an increase in spammy, low-quality results slipping through the cracks—likely why Google is frantically patching things in January.

What This Means for Your Business

If your rankings dropped, don’t panic and don’t make knee-jerk changes.

When volatility is this high, it’s often Google testing the waters. The best strategy right now is to diversify. If Google is favoring YouTube and social discussion (Reddit/X), you need to be there. Relying 100% on your website for traffic is becoming a risky strategy in 2026.

💡 Expert Answers to Your Burning Marketing Questions – Top Client Questions

We expanded on the answers from our newsletter to give you even more actionable advice.

1. Why isn’t my ad showing on Google when I search?

Google will limit ads based on budgets and bidding. Simply put, there are competitors, there are searchers, then there is you. Every person is unique and now the algo is tailoring searches more to individual users than ever before. This means I will see different results than you when searching, and this especially happens in the ad space. If I am more likely to convert, I’ve been searching more recently for plumbers looking at repairs, searching for local plumber near me then Google ads says this is a high value prospect. If your budget, page score (relevancy of your landing page to the users search intent), the keyword, and audience signals match highly then I am placed in a bucket of high value customer to be shown an ad. Now if you just pay for clicks I could see an ad yes but if you are optimized your website for conversions and track that properly and set bids to bid for conversions then you will further be shown or placed in the bucket of here is a top funnel customer, here is a great advertiser, they are likely to convert so let’s match these people up. It’s a match made in… Ad heaven.

So why don’t I see my ad all the time? Well, Google knows you aren’t a match. Google isn’t going to show ads to people who don’t match the audience signals cause that would be bad for Google, their main business model is selling ads. So if you want to be shown Every time, you have to always beat any competitor, that means a crazy high budget often hundreds per day locally and still have a great page quality score with a great ad and proper keywords to boot. But those numbers are just vanity metrics at that point. The spray and pray method of TV doesn’t work anymore with web. Work smarter not harder and that’s what good paid ads do and that’s what we do with our customers everyday. So if your not seeing your ad that sometimes is a good thing cause otherwise you know your wasting money showing to people who aren’t going to buy our product, you.

2. How can I optimize for GEO or AI search and ChatGPT or Gemini?

GEO or Generative Engine Optimization is all about AI Search or LLMs, enough acronyms for you? Googles Danny Sullivan recently stated “Good SEO is Good GEO.” https://searchengineland.com/google-danny-sullivan-good-seo-good-geo-461464 so optimization on your website will help you with AI search optimization also or AEO.

There were some interesting reports from Neil Patel as well that stated that many LLMs source content from a variety of backlinks. This includes Reddit,

3. Do apps on mobile listen and analyze for ad targeting? Can I target ads using live audio recordings from mobile apps? Do apps like Facebook or Instagram record live audio using my phone mic?

We did a reel on this question https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7tn7nqugzE check it out.

4. Do I need an address for my business? What do I miss out on by not having an office or using a po box or my home address?

Google Business Listings do not allow use of PO Box, CMRA, UPS boxes, shared offices like Regus, scheduled offices, or subleases for business listings. Without a valid office space such as with a standard lease agreement where you can have a post card mailed to you and record a video verifying the space along with a sign on a door or outside you will miss out on SEO traffic from Maps. This means that maps traffic will be blocked or suppressed within Google maps for your business. Later we talk about Google Maps traffic and how much that is. For some businesses it is massive.

5. I get calls from Google about my ads saying that I need to optimize or there are issues. Is this a problem?

Generally no and these can largely be ignored. These are handled by tier Google support reps that are in charge of accounts and they often cycle reps every 3 months anyways, meaning you’ll keep getting these calls. Our agency actually has a policy of denying these calls as we work with certain reps at Google that have higher standing directly. If we have specific questions we can reach out to them as we have phone support ourselves which most customers don’t have access to.

We made the decision over a year ago to stop taking Google ads calls for our clients. This was largely due to their updates resulting in more ad spend with less results for clients. We quickly shifted strategy and stopped taking their calls and utilized our own brand optimization within campaigns which works much better. If you get these calls, you can ignore them or you can say that an agency handles your account or that that as per company policies, we don’t take Google ads calls at this time as we do.

If you’re running Google ads yourself without an agency, then it’s okay to take the call from Google. But my recommendation is that you say that you don’t have authority to make budget changes or major campaign changes at this time and Google will direct you to what they advise and you often can learn quite a bit, but I would not necessarily make sweeping campaign changes based on their advice. It’s always good to ask them questions as well and it really does depend on the agent you actually get as many do just read from scripts but occasionally you get a knowledgeable rep that will know a good amount.

6. So is there an auction for every Google ad I run that I have to pay for?

Yes! That is called Ad Exchange by Google that runs tens of thousands of ad auctions per second. Each one competes for space on Google and other properties. Each company bids against each other with Google being auctioneer. This was what the recent DOJ case was about citing Google having a conflict of interest of owning the exchange and also the platform. All companies bid in that quick moment and the winner with the best bid, best page quality score, and best ad overall wins. So it isn’t just your budget that determines the win.

The example I use is Coca-Cola. They have a brand everyone knows. Say RC Cola was to bid for the word “Coca-Cola”, because they are not the brand they have a lower page score than the actual company. Due to this and that their website doesn’t say Coca-Cola everywhere they would actually have less of a chance to win or get top placement in an auction. Coca-Cola would win if they defended their brand name (which they do). This is good because it means money doesn’t just win, you have to be relevant too.

7. Can I rent office space from someone I know that has a bigger space for my Google maps? It is within an existing office, like a room inside their offices.

This is a common question, unfortunately Google has declared war on office spaces like Regus or timeshare-type offices. This means that an office must follow strict criteria or your Google listing will get suspended. Another common situation is a listing will show up but you will be suppressed on Google maps.

An office location needs to conform to:

  • be a valid USPS mailing location
  • not currently be taken by another business
  • not be marked as CMRA or PO box
  • be a legal and valid suite or STE is fine but not shared
  • not be a rental or time-based office that you schedule for time
  • be able to have signage on a door or the exterior of the building
  • not be a home address, must be marked commercial, industrial, or similar in state or county government site plans.
  • having a valid lease is ideal with a landlord or owning the building.
  • be registered with the state on legal docs for the business entity.
  • be able to get a postcard mailed for verification
  • can physically be at the location for a video review that Google does not to show street signs, signage, address, etc in person live.

8. How much traffic comes from Google maps?

It depends. 40-50% of traffic is estimated to come from a Google maps listing for some business service types. Often businesses that serve consumers that need a service are most affected. Maps also has important SEO and AI benefits for location-based searches which, let’s face it, are the majority of searches when people need a service they want it fast which means nearby.

9. Networking, fire marshals, barbershops, go to home and garden shows, is it worth it?

Yes, we recommend listings and adding your business to these pages as long as they allow it, reddit is another place to add info to gain leads. Be honest and say you are a local business overall and how you can help.

10. Is Angies leads, lulupro, thumbtack, home advisor etc worth it?

These sites use Google Ads to get business. Often raising the whole costs of leads on Google. We advise  not using them and instead focusing on your own Google Ads directly. This actually lowers costs for local small businesses by doing this overall. Sites like Angies and others buy  Google Ads to rank themselves number one then charge your business higher price for that lead you could have gotten yourself. On top of that you are competing against other businesses with their platform making costs even higher for you.

11. Are Community Facebook pages, Nextdoor etc to get interest are they worth it?

Yes, we recommend listings and adding your business to these pages as long as they allow it, reddit is another place to add info to gain leads. Be honest and say you are a local business overall and how you can help.

12. Can’t I just do Google Ads myself? Why do I need to pay you?

I am sure you get asked that question if you own a business as well so how would you answer that person? The truth is you can and people do run their own Google Ads but there are factors that make someone use an agency to do the work.

  1. How much time do you have to dedicate to it?
  2. We see that customers that use us get 4x return vs doing it themselves
  3. Yeah but how much time does the agency spend on my account? They have other clients.
  • We try to educate our customers but also use advanced views in Google Ads as an MCC or agency account so we have tons of knobs we can turn to improve accounts. The fact is, if you do it yourself hardly anyone does it.
  • When you use a professional you save time. When we work with accounts we call upon a wealth of knowledge and are ready to play right away. All that we need to know if about your business and goals. This saves tons of time when we manage the accounts to set it up right.
  • Many business DIY it and particularly in SEO, they use AI which has actually said the do terrible things they never should have done resulting in them being suspended on Google maps, and dropping in rankings below 200! This then takes use 1 year to fix vs if they came to us before doing that we could have been showing results in 3-6 months.
  • So you can do it yourself but there is no denying that sometimes you need a pro and then businesses call us. Also remember, when you DIY you are going against us in rankings and Google Ads and we will crush you.
