September has hit hard and fast for business owners as the economy is looking rough for some businesses. We see sectors already adjusting budgets for the season but we don’t recommend that. In many cases, competitors are increasing ad spend and those who can compete are winning, those who cut usually are hurting more.
Businesses are looking to cut costs into fall but we see that as a bad idea often as businesses look to save but really by cutting they find themselves losing customers and business into the fall and then holiday season.
There is no longer an off button for businesses as customers are spending all the time, it is just a matter of attention and awareness for many businesses. We are starting to experiment more with reels and more video as well as social elements that work well for awareness.
When you own a business you wear many hats and you don’t always have the luxury or patience but that is so important now. The businesses that are successful are the ones we work with who invest the time in marketing and PPC, SEO, and social to develop their brand and truly have a strong foundation to analyze conversions and track customer sales funnels.

Here are the top questions this month from our customers:
1. Length of domain does it matter? Should I have my brand in my subdomains?
Length of domains matters to a certain extend but I always look at it as a brand strategy first and SEO doesn’t really cross my mind. You want a brand domain first that makes sense and never keyword stuff. Having a long domain will not help you for SEO at all so avoid it. Long domains are not the best because they are harder to type and remember, this is more important than SEO.
2. Should I get a domain name that is seo’ed like buyboltsincolumbus.com? I get lots of emails from people offering to sell me these domains.
This is a really old SEO technique and is no longer valid. When you get those emails we recommend our clients to ignore them.
It is important to have a website that makes sense for your brand and business but not at the expense of SEO. Never buy a domain name for keywords and instead focus on your brand and what you will be proud to call your own.
3. Should SEO page titles and descriptions be a set length? I have heard 160 characters max but mine is longer.
This is a great question we get a lot. Titles can be longer than this now as Google will rewrite titles on the fly to better align with searches. If you have a title we now recommend no more than 350 characters but if you go over the 160 characters Google is guaranteed to rewrite it for you. If you like your title you best chance is to optimize for 160 characters or less.
There are merits to having a longer title and description but overall our guidance is to keep the titles shorter and the descriptions can be longer with optimization and keywords but make it realistic and do not keyword stuff.
4. Can I use video on my website?
Yes, videos can be used on a website but we recommend optimizing it for best user experience and SEO. If you have a large video file on your site this can cause hosting issues and web crawl issues and Google can think that your site loads really slowly so it can hurt your SEO.
Some ways to keep the file small is to compress it, use Youtube or Vimeo to deliver your video, use a CDN, check with your hosting, and test.
5. Our listings are not getting updated after moving locations, why am I havin+g so many issues changing my address?
We liken this to if you go to court you get a lawyer, the lawyer talks right to the judge and in many cases you can get off easier when you have a professional in your corner vs if you represent yourself.
The same is true with Google. Having a pro in your corner, Google recognizes that and in many cases with listings we can get stuff pushed through easier and faster especially using our higherly qualified listings reps with high Google account standing.
It is frustrating for clients cause changing your address should be easy right? It seems like something that should be a no-brainer. The problem is that past abuse has made Google take extra special care here when people do updates. As a result, many normal accounts have problems updating their listings and often times find themselves with closed listings or suspended accounts. This is where we come in to help.
You have a limited window of only 30 days after a closing or suspension to act, after this time it is very difficult to fix your account. Dont wait, and don’t try to do it all yourself, ask professional help like us. We have seen it too often that people wait and then they lose hundreds of Google reviews because their listings is taken down. Dont Wait!
